Massive Drug Smuggling Operation Busted in Upstate New York

A federal jury in Syracuse has found Wenjian Zhuo, a 32-year-old lawful permanent U.S. resident originally from China, guilty of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The verdict follows a federal investigation that authorities say disrupted a significant drug trafficking operation moving marijuana through upstate New York.

Jury Finds Zhuo Guilty in Drug Trafficking Case

According to evidence presented in court, Zhuo drove from New York City to the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation on January 22, 2025, where investigators say his van was loaded with about 94 kilograms of marijuana. That comes out to roughly 207 pounds. Authorities intercepted him before he could return to New York City to deliver the drugs.

Federal officials say this corridor has been used by criminal networks attempting to move illegal drugs across borders and into communities. Law enforcement agencies involved in the case stressed their continued focus on stopping trafficking activity before it spreads further into the Northeast.

Federal and Local Agencies Collaborate in Investigation

The investigation was handled by U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Swanton Sector, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Enforcement Division. Prosecutors say the coordinated effort helped stop a large shipment before it reached its intended destination.

Zhuo Faces Sentencing and Potential Penalties

Zhuo is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23, 2026, in federal court. The conviction carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison, fines of up to one million dollars, and at least three years of supervised release. Final sentencing will be determined by the judge based on federal guidelines and the specifics of the case.
