I'm definitely no moving expert but I've had my fair share of moving adventures in life. Coming from a military family, moving was just a regular part of the deal. As an adult, I've packed up and relocated every five years or so, moving both across state lines and just across town.

Right now, my family is knee-deep in a giant cross-country move because my husband is being transferred for work, and our lives are like a whirlwind of chaos. However, the chaos is centered around selling our current house and buying a new one in a state we've never even visited - not about the actual moving process. Compared to the buying and selling business, that's been a breeze.

When I find out a move is on the horizon, I always dive straight into collecting boxes and starting to pack. While I might not have control over all the other moving pieces, taking charge of packing early on – while not ideal to live out of boxes – helps relieve so much stress and pressure.

If you're gearing up for a move soon, I thought I'd share some of the things that have helped me keep my sanity intact through the chaos.

Start Early and Plan Ahead

Beginning the planning process as soon as possible, whether you're moving near or far, can really ease last-minute stress. Booking movers, rounding up packing supplies, and sorting out logistics in advance can make a huge difference.

Get to Know Your New Neighborhood

If you're moving to a totally new area, lean on your realtor and community resources to learn about your new surroundings. Ask tons of questions and soak up all the info you can about the local scene. Check out local Facebook community groups and Reddit threads.

Declutter and Downsize

Letting go of stuff can be tough, but sometimes it's necessary. Take a good look at what you're packing and consider parting ways with items you no longer need or love. It'll make your new space feel more organized and welcoming.

Pack Smart

Opt for sturdy boxes, label everything clearly, and pack essentials separately for easy access. Keeping a backpack with essentials like clothes, toiletries, and important documents handy can be a lifesaver.

Set a Detailed Budget

Moving costs can add up fast, so creating a thorough budget covering all aspects of your move will help keep you financially on track.

Notify the Right People

Make sure the postal service, utility providers, and other important parties know about your move. Getting your services transferred smoothly is key.

Choose a Trustworthy Moving Company

Do your research and pick a reputable moving company. Moving quotes can vary, so prep yourself for potentially higher costs, especially for long-distance moves.

Explore Storage Options

If you need extra storage space, look into different storage solutions in your new area. Renting a storage unit can be handy for items that won't fit in your new spot.

Embrace the Adventure

Moving may be chaotic, but it also opens the door to new beginnings and exciting possibilities. Embrace the change, dive into your new community, and look forward to the journey ahead. And remember, even on the tough days, reassure yourself that everything will eventually fall into place. You've got this! Eventually, the chaos will settle, and you'll find your footing in your new home. So hang in there – it's all going to be okay.

These Are the Smallest Counties in New York State. And We Mean SMALL!!

There are 62 counties in the state of New York. The largest (by population) is Kings County (Brooklyn). It has a population of 2,726,002 people. But, there are far more smaller counties in the state than larger ones. This list takes a look at the smallest counties in New York, with all of them in some region of Upstate New York. Even though they are sparsely populated, each has a few places that any NYS road warrior might want to stop at and explore. So here are the 19 smallest counties (by most recent population data) in the state and what you might find on a visit to each of them. Two interesting pieces of trivia you will find in this list. The largest of the 19 counties on this list could take every single resident in the whole county out to Highmark Stadium out to the Buffalo area to watch a Buffalo Bills football game, and still have room for 10,000 more guests in the stadium. And (this one will blow your mind) the very smallest county in New York State literally has no stop lights in the entire county!
