New York Lands Near Bottom for Active Seniors
A new study by Mirador Living is looking at how active older adults are doing across the country. They looked at thousands of Google searches from 2025 to see what activities seniors were interested in. The results show that New York ranks near the bottom among people age 65 and older.
New York Ranks Among Least Active States
New York was third with the least active senior populations. Researchers looked at 4,753 types of activity-related searches, including exercise, hobbies, and outdoor activities. Even though New York has a large older population, the number of activity searches were low compared to other states.
Search Numbers Tell Part of the Story
In 2025, seniors in New York made about 333,600 activity-related searches. That might sound like a lot, but when adjusted for population size, it equals about 8,879 searches per 100,000 older residents.
Indoor Activities Seem More Popular
The study found that many older adults in New York appear to prefer indoor activities. “Working out” was the most searched activity, with more than 5,000 searches. Outdoor activities like walking, biking, and hiking were searched much less. Researchers say this could reflect weather or personal comfort preferences.
Some States Show Much Higher Interest
On the other end of the list, Alaska ranked number one for activity interest among seniors. Wyoming, Vermont, and the Dakotas also did well. Montana made the top ten for active senior interest, suggesting that older adults there may be more engaged in recreational activities.

What This Might Mean Going Forward
The study doesn't tell the whole story, but can show trends. Lower search activity doesn’t mean people are inactive, they may have routines or look less online. As New York’s older population grows, knowing what helps seniors stay active could play an important role in overall health and quality of life.
