As New York families get ready for Halloween, a new study has ranked the sugar in 37 popular candies. Necco Wafers came in first, with 89.5 grams of sugar per 100 grams of candy. Smarties came in second, with 85.7 grams. The numbers compare the same amount of each candy. Unfortuanetly, they don’t show how much sugar is in one piece.

They also didn't rank them by the individual pieces or packages, they compared the candies by their weight. So the serving size can end up making the difference in how much sugar is actually eaten.

Chocolate Didn’t Make the Top 10

None of the chocolate candies in the study made the top ten. Probably because candy bars like Snickers or Twix have much less sugar by weight. Among the chocolate treats, 3 Musketeers had the most sugar, at 68 grams per 100 grams. Butterfinger had the least sugar of the 37 candies studied, with 38.9 grams per 100 grams.

Candy Corn Ranked Higher Than Butterfinger

Brach’s Classic Candy Corn had 74.2 grams of sugar per 100 grams. That put it near the top of the list, while Butterfinger ranked lowest. The study by Go Smoke Free compared nutrition labels on popular candies sold in the United States.

It included treats such as Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, Skittles and Peeps. This study is a different way to look at your favorite Halloween goodies but it doesn't mean that one kind of candy is healthier than another kind of candy bar.
