New York Expands Workers’ Compensation for Work-Related Stress
New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed new legislation that expands workers' compensation benefits to include employees experiencing exceptional workplace stress. This move is a departure from the previous policy that restricted such benefits to only select first responders.
Speaking on the importance of this legislation, Governor Hochul emphasized the need to support workers facing unprecedented mental health challenges, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She stated, "...those who have experienced the unthinkable while on the job deserve to be treated fairly...we need to do everything in our power to lend a hand to those in need."
This new bill is part of Governor Hochul's broader initiative to invest $1 billion in healthcare. Earlier in the year, she unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance youth mental health services, following consultations with New York teens during the Youth Mental Health Listening Tour in the previous year.
As part of her efforts to improve mental health services, Governor Hochul also announced a significant financial commitment to expand mental health services at 28 State University of New York campuses, catering to over 200,000 students. This investment underscores her dedication to supporting mental health initiatives across various sectors of society.

Furthermore, Governor Hochul has proposed a cell phone restriction policy in New York state classrooms for the upcoming school year. This policy aims to safeguard children from harmful online content and mitigate the adverse effects of social media platforms on youth mental health.
