A new study from SmartAsset looked at where Americans are having the most trouble with their credit cards. The report, called “Credit Card Chaos: Where Americans Face the Most Trouble With Their Cards,” looked at more than 262 million complaints sent to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau between August 2024 and July 2025.

What the Study Looked At

They examined the types of problems people are reporting across all 50 states. These included errors in credit reporting, unexpected fees, trouble paying bills, getting denied for accounts, and other frustrating credit card issues.

Trouble Spots Around the Country

Texas ranked the highest in the country for credit card complaints, with nearly 40 percent of those complaints involving incorrect information on credit reports. Illinois had the most complaints about trouble opening new credit card accounts.

Louisiana residents were the most likely to report issues with fees and interest charges. Meanwhile, South Dakota, Wyoming, and North Dakota had the fewest complaints overall.

Where New York Fits In

Here in the Empire State, we aren't at the very top of the complaint list, but many New Yorkers struggle with credit card problems. Common issues include incorrect credit report details, surprise fees, and trouble getting approved for accounts. With the high cost of living and heavy reliance on credit, these problems quickly add stress to our lives.

New Yorkers Face Debt Challenges

Families in New York also face real challenges with debt, credit reporting errors, and fees that can add up fast. The study is a reminder to check credit reports regularly, keep your eye on fees, and speak up when something doesn’t look right. To see the states that face the most credit troubles, go here.
