The Miracle That Started St. Jude
The Remarkable Story Behind St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
The origins of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital trace back more than 60 years and begin with one man’s faith, sacrifice, and promise.
Entertainer Danny Thomas was a struggling performer, nearly broke and about to become a father, when a moment of desperation changed his life — and the futures of millions of children.
A Prayer and a Promise
With just $7 to his name, Thomas walked into a Detroit church and placed his last dollars into the collection basket. He prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, asking for guidance and help finding his way in life.

In that moment, Thomas made a vow: if his prayer was answered, he would build a shrine in honor of St. Jude.
An Answer the Very Next Day
The next day, Thomas was offered a small acting job that paid ten times the amount he had just given away. He believed it was a sign that his prayer had been answered.

From that point forward, Thomas committed himself to fulfilling the promise he had made — not just with words, but with action.
Turning a Vision Into Reality
Thomas dreamed of creating a place where children with catastrophic illnesses could receive care regardless of race, religion, or their family’s ability to pay.

That dream became reality on February 4, 1962, when St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened its doors in Memphis, Tennessee. It was the first pediatric cancer research hospital in the world and would go on to become one of the most respected children’s hospitals anywhere.
A Mission That Still Saves Lives
The founding promise of St. Jude remains the same today: families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food. That means parents can focus on helping their child heal, not worrying about how to pay for care.
Thanks to donors and supporters, St. Jude continues to lead the way in childhood cancer research, sharing its discoveries freely with doctors and hospitals around the world.
