What a bizarre thing to happen in New York State.

Police got a phone call from the airport saying that there was a gray seal that was on a runway that was closed down, according to the New York State DEC office.

The JFK Airport called and said that the seal was captured, released and now doing just fine according to their Facebook post this week. You can take a look at some of the pictures below.

Nearby DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) responded quickly to assist Airport Operations and Wildlife staff to ensure the safe capture and removal of the seal. Teams secured the seal in a large kennel, and DEC ECOs transported the seal into the care of NY Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC). The seal was evaluated by a veterinarian, given a flipper tag, and released happy and healthy on a beach in Suffolk County later that evening!

How did a seal get to the runway of the airport?!

Apparently, the harbor in New York City is very close to the JFK Airport. Once in a while they will make it over to the airport. Some people think that they love the warmth of the blacktop and this young pup made its way onto the unused runway.

The DEC and other officials tagged the seal so that they can track him when he makes his way back into the wild. Good going by everyone involved!
