$450 Coming to Every Pet Owner in New York State
Great news if you are a pet owner in New York State. It does not matter if you have a dog or a cat or a smaller animal, if you are a pet owner, you will get some money to help you take care of your animal. The funds will be a tax credit up to $900, no matter how many pets you have. Here is what the breakdown will look like.
Here is what pet owners in New York State would get paid for:
- $150 for supplies like food, leashes, bowls, and other supplies.
- $300 would be for covering vet costs and medicines.
The bill is only in the proposed stage right now and if it is approved, officials want it to go into effect immediately. It is right now in the "committee" stage.
What pets qualify for this tax credit?
Not every pet will qualify for this tax credit in New York State.
The bill specifically excludes certain animals from the definition of "household pet," such as research animals, breeding animals, and working dogs like police or detection dogs. Taxpayers will need to provide documentation to the tax commissioner proving pet ownership and the actual costs incurred.
As you can imagine, there are a ton of people who love the idea that they are going to get some 'free' money to take care of their animal, but of course it comes from New York State taxpayers. A lot of people are arguing that it is wasteful spending and irresponsible to give New York State pet owners money just because they have an animal and that they should be financially responsible for their own animals.
