It’s almost a rite of passage to split streaming accounts between friends and family. Whether you still log in using an ex’s username or split the cost of the subscription between a few friends, sharing your streaming passwords is commonplace.

It’s not necessarily to “cheat the system,” as some may think. It’s more because there is so much content available on so many different streaming services. If you were to fund each service on your own, the cost definitely adds up. Splitting a streaming service (or, if we’re honest here, just using someone’s username and password) is a smart way to keep your budget in check without missing out on the shows you want to watch.

For months, Netflix has warned its customers that it would crack down on users sharing their accounts with people who don’t live in their households. Many worldwide Netflix users have waited out the rumored changes, hoping it wouldn’t affect them. Unfortunately, for Canadian Netflix users, the time has officially run out.

New changes for Netflix subscribers who live in Canada were rolled out late last week. Now, instead of users being able to log into Netflix regardless of where they live, users must select a “primary location” by February 21st. According to an email that was sent to Canadian users, Netflix stated that account users who share with someone who doesn’t live in their “primary location” could transfer their profile to a new membership that they pay for, or users have the option to share their account with someone who doesn’t live with them for an additional $7.99 per month.

Needless to say, Canadian Netflix users are not happy about the change and are canceling their accounts in droves.

There’s no word on when these new account rules will be implemented in the United States, but when it does, Netflix can expect their US users who share an account to freak out about the change.

It remains to be seen how these changes will affect Netflix’s overall business. Will users suck it up and purchase their own subscriptions or pay the additional eight bucks a month for their friends and family? Or will this lead to mass cancellations of accounts like what’s happening in Canada?

Either way, if you live in the United States, now is the time to binge-watch your favorite Netflix shows while you still can - that, or cut the cord early and find a new show on a streaming service that still lets you share. After all, there are more than enough of them to choose from.
