It's the busiest time of the year across the country for travel. One of the biggest reasons, aside from cost, that people choose NOT to to fly these days is the unexpected hassles that come along with it. Delayed flights are one of the biggest culprits. If you're flying out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport, what is the chance that your flight will be delayed?

Buffalo showed up on a list of airports with the most delays in the country

A study was done recently to determine which airports in the United States had the highest percentage of delays last year around this time. It didn't end up all that great for flights leaving from New York.

InsureMyTrip dug into new DOT data and found that Buffalo was on the list of the most delayed flights. They came in at number 8 on the list.

Which airport had the most delayed flights?

Buffalo Niagara International Airport was at number 8, but that means there were 7 airports ahead of it that were worse. The airport in the number 1 slot was Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) out of Newark, New Jersey. Anyone who has ever had a layover in Newark knows that it could be a problem.

Is weather a factor when it comes to delayed flights?

We've seen our fair share of weather here in Buffalo. Most of us would rather have them take the correct amount of time to have a plane de-iced than to take off on time and run into an emergency later.

But when you look at the full top 10 list of airports with the most delays, only two airports that normally deal with cold, snowy weather appear. The rest are mostly from warm-weather cities. Airports like San Francisco, Palm Beach, San Diego, Dallas, and more all show up.

Top 10 Airports with the Highest Percentage of Delays (Nov–Dec 2024) include:

  1. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  1. San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  1. Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)
  1. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
  1. San Diego International Airport (SAN)
  1. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
  1. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  1. Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF)
  1. Richmond International Airport (RIC)
  1. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

The concern for delayed flights isn't always just the waiting

A lot of people don't realize that delayed flights cost more than your time. They can also cost you real money from your bank account. Many airlines aren't required to reimburse travelers for things like meals, hotels, or missed connections, so that could actually come out of your pocket.
