Is Buffalo One Of The Laziest Cities In America?

In fact, many people consider workers here in the U.S. to actually be overworked, letting our jobs affect our physical and mental health. Recent data showed that American workers put in an average of 1,811 hours per year in 2022 -  way more time than many other countries throughout the world. 

The financial website WalletHub compared over 100 of the largest cities in the U.S., including Buffalo, to figure out which metros “outwork” the rest of America. Using eleven key metrics like employment rates, average weekly work hours, and how many workers have multiple jobs, they ranked each city according to how “hardworking” they are.

So where did Buffalo land on the list?

You could look at this as either a positive or a negative, but Buffalo was close to last on WalletHub’s list of the “Hardest-Working Cities In The U.S.,” coming in at #114 out of 116 cities. 

The Nickel City ranked extremely low when it came to the site’s “direct work factors” metrics, which includes average workweek hours, share of households where no adults work, employment rate, share of workers leaving vacation time unused, and share of “engaged” workers. (Gallup defines “engaged workers” as employees that are “involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace.”)

Is Buffalo NY A “Lazy” City?

We hardly think so! 

There are plenty of people here in the city of Buffalo who work incredibly hard to make ends meet, often working long hours in multiple jobs. 

We prefer to look at it like Buffalo workers have better priorities than the higher-ranking cities on the list, and are more willing to spend their time with their friends and families doing things they love than cooped up at work.
