How Old Do You Have to Be to Ride an ATV in New York State?

There are several laws when it comes to operating an ATV in New York State, including equipment requirements and safety guidelines. One of the most common questions is: how old do you have to be to legally ride an ATV? And do you need a driver’s license?

"You do not need a driver license to operate an ATV in New York State, but certain restrictions apply to operators under age 16".

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, there are specific age restrictions:

  • Riders under 16 years old must have adult supervision.
  • Youth riders can operate an ATV if they complete an approved safety training course.

ATV Rules for Kids Under 14 in New York State

The laws become even stricter for children under 14 years old.

If your child is riding an ATV under the age of 14:

  • They must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
  • If a parent or guardian is not present, the ATV can only be operated on land owned or leased by the parent or guardian.

These rules are designed to keep young riders safe while still allowing them to enjoy the sport.

"Adult Supervision means being accompanied by a person at least 18 years of age, or a person 16 or 17 years of age who holds an ATV safety course completion certificate from the ATV Safety Institute (ASI)".
