It's always sad to hear about a business that is shuttering its doors in Western New York. But when they've been around for over 100 years, it makes it all that much worse.

George & Company is closing their doors forever

For those who have never been inside George & Company, it might be hard to fathom all of the fun stuff they have in there.  It's filled with costumes and masks year-round, puzzles, games, magic tricks, novelty toys, and more. It's really a great place for everyone. However, in a social media post, the family announced that they were calling it quits and that the store would be closing down for good at the end of 2025.

"After more than a century in business, our family is announcing our retirement and that the George & Company retail store will be closing at the end of 2025." - George & Co on Facebook

George & Company has been in Western New York for a very long time

The news is even sadder considering how long they've been in business in Western New York. In their post, they mention that the store was founded in 1901 and carried on through 4 generations of the Smilanich family. That means they were just getting started when McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt were in office!

They began on Main Street in Buffalo and stayed there for a century before moving to their current location in Clarence.

The community speaks out about how much they'll miss George & Company

If you ever want to see the kind of impact a store has on a community, read the comments when they make a decision like this. The comments on this particular post are from people thanking them for helping them chase their crazy dreams, an autistic person who said they helped him bring joy to others through costumes he got there, and more.

I know that my son used to always love going there. We would take trips there on his birthday to get him some cool pranks or magic tricks that he could surprise people with and he loved it.

You'll still have some time to check them out if you haven't ever seen them before, or if you'd like to make one final visit. They will be closing at the end of 2025.
