Scam Alert at Registers at Grocery Stores in New York State
There was an incident in Erie County, New York where officials found another skimming device to steal funds at grocery stores.
There was a card skimming device that was found at a TOPS grocery store location. This means that there is a device and when you can your card to pay for your groceries, the device will steal all of your information and now someone else can use it.
This is something that it not exactly new, but until someone realizes that they are being scammed when they check their account, it is too late.
What does a cash register skimming device look like?
It is hard to see and notice because it is a device that snaps over the machine just like the regular one. To the untrained eye they might be so hard to see.
Erie County took to social media to warn residents about what was happening and a specific date time frame on when your card may have been at risk.
A new scam that has been happening all over Western New York was a skimming problem at gas stations. There were skimmers for credit cards, and scammers were also putting a certain device at the pump where the handle goes and it does not reset the pump so that the person who is doing the scamming can just pick up the handle and pump "free" gas--that you paid for, of course.
