Yesterday, it was big news that veteran NFL cornerback Darius Slay was being claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills. If you were hoping to see him play on Sunday against the Bengals, don't hold your breath. He might not end up coming here after all.

How do waivers work in the NFL?

We hear a lot about players having to clear waivers, or being claimed by waivers, but how does it actually work?

If a player is cut by a team, and has enough years in the league, they can either become a free agent, or go through the waiver process. If they aren't eligible to become a free agent, teams can then put waivers in for them. All of the waiver claims get submitted at the same time, and the team highest on the waiver priority list is awarded the player and must assume the existing contract.

Darius Slay isn't sure he will be reporting to Buffalo

The Bills went through the waiver process to claim veteran cornerback Darius Slay yesterday and they were able to claim him.

The Bills now own the rights to his contract.

However...Slay will not be reporting to Buffalo.

According to Adam Schefter, he is not sure that he wants to continue playing in the NFL and is considering retirement.

“Slay is honored that a first-class organization like the Bills claimed him, but he is going to take some time away from football right now and decide in the next few days if he wants to keep playing," - Drew Rosenhaus, Darius Slay's agent

Normally, if a player is contemplating retirement, his time has come. Once his mind has gone there, he might as well hang up that jersey. We will find out in the next couple of days what he's planning on doing.
