The old Adam's Mark Hotel turned into the Buffalo Grand Hotel and could very well be turning into a jail for Erie County.

Erie County and Mark Poloncarz announced yesterday that they will be building a brand new jail to combine the downtown Buffalo holding center and the correctional facility in Alden on Walden.

Where is the new jail going to be?

Erie County is eyeing up the Buffalo Grand Hotel. Erie County Sheriff Garcia said:

plans for the new facility have not been finalized, but confirmed the county is looking at the Buffalo Grand Hotel on Church Street as a “possible site.” He says as far as he knows there are no other sites being considered at this time", according to WIVB.

Why does Erie County want to combine the jails? For efficiency and financial reasons:

  • 20-23% reduction in staff
  • saving about $17 million per year
  • No current employee would lose their job
  • more ideal for police and inmates
  • Tax payers will recoup the money in "10 years"

Ironically, the owner of the Buffalo Grand Hotel knew nothing about any offer. Owner Harry Stinson said that he is not actively selling nor has heard anything about Erie County potentially buying his hotel. In fact, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said this during his address yesterday afternoon, and the news calling Stinson is the first time that he even heard anything about such a thing.
