If you love the game of Cornhole, then Buffalo might not be the place for you according to a recent study.

This week is the 2023 American Cornhole Organization Worlds (July 24–29) and the American Cornhole League World championships (July 29–Aug. 6).  So who will be celebrating the most and following along with the games?  It won't be Buffalo according to this study.

First of all, what is cornhole?

If you've never played cornhole, you are probably asking yourself what the heck it is.  It's a lawn game.  It consists of two boards spaced 27 feet apart from each other.  There is only one hole in each board.  Each team gets 4 bags (normally filled with corn, but sometimes with beads) that have to be thrown from one board to the other.  The goal is to get the bags in the hole.  It sounds easy, but if you've ever played, you know that it takes a ton of practice to get really good.

Which cities are the best for cornhole lovers?

A company called Lawn Starter did a study to determine which cities would be the best for people who love cornhole.  Which cities have the most access to cornhole venues?  Which ones have access to park and lawn space?  Who has the most clubs and tournaments to enter?

Sadly, Buffalo didn't do very well in this one.

The top 3 cities on this list (in order) included Houston, San Diego, and Phoenix.  Considering they're all warm climate cities, it makes sense.  They're going to have more access to outdoor games like that.

Where did Buffalo fall?

Buffalo was 169th on the list out of 200 cities.  Where we failed was with our access to great clubs and tournaments and also the community.

However...

Buffalo scored pretty high with how popular cornhole is.  We were ranked at 20th out of 200 cities.  So, if it's a popular sport and people love it, maybe it's going to be on the rise soon here in Western New York.  As things become more popular, there will become more access for people to play.

It's easily my favorite lawn game.  I could play cornhole for hours on end.  I would guess that it is the perfect sport for this area too.  Over the summer, we get some pretty good weather to play, and in the winter, it wouldn't take that much to find a building big enough where you could play inside.  What do you think?  Is Buffalo a good place for cornhole?
