Simple New Invention To Clear Snow From Highmark Stadium
This past weekend, Orchard Park was once again blanketed in snow and the fans were asked to help clean up Highmark Stadium.
You know how when certain things need to be done to your house, you put them off until you can't anymore? Well, that time is now for the Bills. They need these ASAP.
In Buffalo, we get snow
Highmark Stadium is an open-air stadium. We love that in Buffalo! The snow came down this weekend and it certainly didn't keep fans from coming to the game. That's what the new stadium will be too. They'll have a canopy to cover most of the seats, but snow storms like the ones we have gotten over the last couple of days won't be stopped entirely by canopies.
As long as Lake Erie has water in it, we will have snow in Buffalo. Sometimes that turns out to be a lot of snow.
Bills fans were asked to shovel snow before the game
This past weekend, the Bills offered fans an opportunity to help shovel out the stadium for $20 an hour as they have done in the past. I'm sure there are plenty of people who believe that this is a really cool thing to be able to do. It puts a little money in people's pockets before the holidays and makes them feel like they've been able to contribute to the team.
Once again, the shovelers were told not to worry about the seats and to just focus on clearing the aisles before fans arrived.
I kind of think it stinks.
Some of these fans spend hundreds of dollars on these seats. The least the Bills could do is actually provide them with a seat to sit on or shovel out a place for them to stand.
Now, I know, it's a huge task. These snowstorms tend to drop a ton of heavy snow in a hurry. Believe me, I spent all weekend clearing out my driveway myself. But the NFL makes a ridiculous amount of money. They couldn't pay a crew that could come in and get it all cleared out? Is their long-term plan to simply rely on people who are available to walk to the stadium? We definitely have the most loyal fans in the league.
Every year it feels like a huge misstep.
The Bills can fix this in the future
Earlier in the year I found this post on X about how they deal with the snow in Green Bay:
They're custom-built snow blowers that are built to fit between the bleachers at Lambeau Field. It's brilliant.
Granted, it would still cost money and there would still be manual labor involved. But wouldn't this make it a lot quicker for crews to move snow out of that stadium?
The Bills still have at least two more home games left in the regular season (and probably more in the playoffs if they keep on winning the way they have). You know there's more snow in the forecast. Now is the time to come up with a plan to get that stadium ready for a home playoff game in January without relying on fans to clean it out.
