U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand wants the federal government to tap into upstate’s small businesses to help increase the country’s exports.

Gillibrand toured the binoptics facility in Lansing Monday with Karen Gordon Mills, administrator of the Small Business Administration. Both led a round table discussion focusing on helping upstate industry.

Mills said upstate New York has the facilities to produce more high quality products, but needs more capital to do it.

She added that New York is among the leading states in venture capital received, but most of that money only gets as far as New York City.
