BYRON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease has frozen to death after she wandered away from her rural western New York home.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that Carol Magoffin walked out of her home Thursday while her husband slept. Deputies say the husband awoke to find her gone, saw a rear door unlatched and followed footprints in the snow in the backyard of their home in the town of Byron, 23 miles southwest of Rochester.

Police say he found her body in a wooded area about 100 yards from the home.

Deputies say she wasn't wearing proper clothing for the weather conditions, which included temperatures in the single digits with the wind chill well below zero.
