Do You Know These 9 Amazing Upstate New York Women? You Should!!
There are so many famous people with deep roots to Upstate New York. We will begin to focus, in small groups, on these famous folks with short bios, references, and stories in upcoming galleries. This gallery looks at an interesting selection of famous women who can trace their legacy back to Upstate New York. You may have heard of one or two of them, but for the most part their stores are not well-known but they are compelling nonetheless.
In this gallery you will meet the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and live (and she did it on her 63rd birthday), and you will see the "Female Paul Revere" whose famous ride during the Revolutionary War out-matched Revere's more famous ride.
You will meet a very famous motion picture actress from Upstate New York who mentioned her birthplace during her acceptance speech when she won an Academy Award! And, among others, you will read about a real woman who portrayed the fictional product image of "Aunt Jemima" for the Quaker Oats Company for many years. She was a well-known and beloved citizen of Syracuse, and in fact is buried there.
These are all great stories including "The Catskill's Innkeeper," "The White Woman of the Genesee," and even a woman who was called "The Most Beautiful Suffragette."
If you know of a famous, perhaps little known, woman from Upstate New York let us know over on our Facebook page. On our next post we will look at a sampling of sports figures, mostly unknown, but who hailed from Upstate New York and left a mark on the pop and sports landscape over the years.
