Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that permits immigrant parents to designate a standby guardian should the parents be detained in New York or is facing deportation. Last week the New York Legislature passed a change in a earlier law allowing the designation if a parent became incapacitated without having to go to court for that designation to take effect. The new law applies to both documented and undocumented immigrants plus it extends the duration from six months to a year.
