Committee to Save New York Shuts Down

NEW YORK (AP) — A business lobbying group that that spent millions of dollars promoting Gov. Andrew Cuomo's policies says it is shutting down to avoid suggestions that it might use its financial muscle to influence electoral politics.

The Committee to Save New York is closing after a brief run that saw it become a lobbying powerhouse overnight.

Its emergence alarmed some good-government advocates, who noted that its many TV advertisements supporting the governor came without any of the transparency usually required of political campaigns.

It has never identified its donors. When a new law began requiring disclosure in January, it ceased being active.

Committee spokesman Michael McKeon tells The New York Times the group's backers believed they had accomplished what they set out to achieve when they founded the organization in 2010.
