Chobani Recognized For Hurricane Matthew Relief
(Press release from the American Red Cross)
People in the Southeast continue to deal with the effects of Hurricane Matthew, which made landfall in early October. Reports indicate more than 18,000 homes have been affected across Florida, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Thanks to the help of community partners like the Chobani Foundation, the American Red Cross is with those families in need.
Norwich, New York based Chobani, LLC generously donated 8,707 cases of yogurt to people devastated by Matthew. Chobani representatives made their own travel arrangements and personally delivered the yogurt to Red Cross shelter residents in Tarboro, Kinston and Lumberton, North Carolina. The company then delivered the remaining yogurt to the Eastern and Central North Carolina Food Bank to be distributed to people in need across the state.
The American Red Cross will formally recognize the Chobani Foundation for their support of the ongoing Hurricane Matthew Relief Efforts at a ceremony Monday, November 14 at 11am at Chobani, LLC, located at 147 NY-320 in Norwich, NY.
“I am so proud that a local company, like Chobani, has gone above and beyond to help the Red Cross provide hope to families who lost everything to this devastating storm,” said Colleen McCabe, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter. “Through their efforts to personally deliver this generous gift, Chobani has truly shown our Southeastern neighbors that the Southern Tier is here to support them during their recovery process.”
“Giving back is one of Chobani’s founding principles, and that applies not only to the communities in which we live and work, but also to communities all across the nation who need our help,” said Jeff Genung, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications for Chobani. “When Hurricane Matthew wrought widespread devastation in its journey across the Western Atlantic earlier this month, the Chobani Foundation decided to step in and help our neighbors in North Carolina with a small act of kindness – temporary respite and comfort in the form of our delicious, nutritious and natural Greek Yogurt.”
Since Matthew first threatened, the American Red Cross has mobilized more than 5,800 disaster workers, including 11 volunteers from the Southern Tier Chapter, who have served more than 1.36 million meals and snacks, distributed 317,000 relief items, supported nearly 30,000 health and mental health services and provided over 101,000 overnight shelter stays. The Red Cross is also helping people to recover by connecting them to services and resources they need, and will support those affected for as long as help is needed.
