Broadband Internet Coming to Upstate New York

New York State is spreading $14.5 million around to nine counties outside of New York City to improve high-speed internet in areas where it’s currently not available.

Officials in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office says the projects involve putting in 614 miles of fiber cable to connect around 29,000 residents and 2,000 businesses to the internet.

Officials say most of the projects are in rural portions of the Southern Tier and North Country.

The Southern Tier allocation of $672,000 is headed to the Southern Tier Network development corporation and will target Corning, Schuyler and Steuben Counties.

$2.4 million of the money is going to a fiber network in Yates County.
