Big Chuck Found His Favorite 2018 Christmas Song By Mistake This Morning!
After more than 30 years in radio I am always looking for that one new Christmas song that will stick out of the pack each year. I play hundreds of Christmas songs from Thanksgiving to December 25 each year. I really enjoy most of them and each year I look for one special one that sticks out. last year I remember it was "Mary Did You Know" by the a'capella group Pentatonix.
But this year my search for that new favorite has stretched well into two weeks after Thanksgiving. But I found it! This morning, by mistake.
A listener emailed me with a song request. She wanted to hear "Hard Candy Christmas" by Dolly Parton. She recorded it for the 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Really a wonderful song.
So I went to my "music source" and loaded the song to play on the air. Little did I know that several other artists have recorded "Hard Candy Christmas" over the years. I loaded one of those by mistake, not the Dolly Parton version.
As the song played through my headphones I thought, "gee, that isn't Dolly." I turned it up. Way up. I could feel the hair on the back of my neck start to stand up as I listened to what I think is a remarkable duet on this cover version. Cyndi Lauper, no shrinking violet when it comes to a vocal performance, teams up with country/bluegrass virtuoso Alison Krauss on this version of the classic. It is outstanding.
And, I just found my new favorite 2018 Chirstmas song of the year. I hope you enjoy it.
