The State Senate is proposing to restore funding for the tractor Rollover Protection System (ROPS) rebate program that provides help to New York farmers to purchase and retrofit tractors with ROPS.

State Senator James Seward recently expressed his support for the ROPS rebate program, which was cut from the governor’s budget proposal.

Seward says $100,000 will be included in the senate budget to continue the ROPS program.

"Since the program started 1,100 have been retrofitted here in New York State," Seward said. "We know of at least 13 rollovers that have occurred with retrofitted tractors. In every case, it saved the life of the farmer."

The program rebates 70 percent of the cost of purchasing and installing the ROPS, up to $765. Tractor accidents are the top cause of fatalities on the farm.
