Coordinator of Cornell University’s Wildlife Damage Management Program, Paul Curtis, says that despite the cold winter and spring, ticks are abundant this year in New York state.

The deer tick does not like dry open areas and cannot be found in tall grass. Instead they are found in shaded sites such as woods or woodland edges, or in a shaded home landscape. Tick densities are correlated with abundant deer populations and deer can be infested with Lyme Disease.

Pet owners should ensure their animals are protected by a quality flea and tick application.
