New York’s department of Taxation and Finance is out with a warning about scammers making threatening phone calls from people claiming to be tax agents. Often the scammers try to bully victims into paying a false tax debt by turning over private information or wiring money. Officials say department employees don’t threaten taxpayers and notify people by mail before making calls or sending emails. Contact the department if you believe you’ve become a victim of a tax fraud scam.
