Officers of the Fort Hill American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 376 recently honored a very special member, Marguerite Stiles with a luncheon for her 101st birthday.
Jan Pollard, Unit 376 president; Christine Gregoire, second vice; and Jeanie Petersen, membership chair, brought Marguerite from UMH Hilltop Campus in Johnson City to celebrate her milestone birthday out at Applebee's in Vestal. (As a point of reference, America had just entered WWI when Marguerite was born.) Marguerite, an Honorary Life Member of Unit 376, charmed the younger members with detailed stories of her past. She has been a member of the Auxiliary for 65 years for which she was presented with a framed commemorative certificate. Her eligibility to join was under her late husband, Frank Edward Stiles, who served in the U.S. Navy for three years during WWII. They were married before the War and traveled for nine years after he returned, before they settled down in Greene.
Marguerite worked in the Greene school library for a year. She was also active in the Greene Garden Club and won an award in the “Standard Flower Show” competitions for a floral arrangement at the Chenango County Fair, and she was a member of the Greene Coin Club for many years.
