The City of Oneonta is prepared for the effects of Hurricane Sandy, according to Mayor Dick Miller, who visited the Townsquare Media studios Monday morning.

After last year's flooding from Hurricane Irene and the floods of 2006, city officials have the experience and knowledge to handle Sandy.

"We're as prepared as we can be for this kind of thing," Miller said. "We have a team of very experienced people; we've been through this before. Everybody in a key position has done this before and I have full confidence in them."

Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring high winds to the area. Rain is expected to be minimal -- 1-3 inches in total -- in the immediate area. The winds, which are expected to be sustained at 30 mph, will gust up to 60 mph and likely cause mass power outages across New York State.

Flash flooding is a possibility, but due to the summer drought, the area can better handle whatever rain falls.

"I think the weather will get progressively worse throughout the day," Miller said. "(But) there's less water in the ground and our reservoirs are down nearly two feet. All of our relative department heads take whatever precautions we can."
