State agricultural officials are urging New Yorkers not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from an Ithaca-area farm.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Markets, a sample of milk from the Jerry Dell Farm in Freeville was found to be contaminated with salmonella.

In a statement released November 25, Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball indicated no illnesses associated with the possibly tainted milk had been reported to the department.

The statement revealed the farm was notified of a preliminary positive test result and agreed to stop selling raw milk.

The farm on Fall Creek Road has a state permit allowing it to sell raw milk.

Milk sampling is performed quarterly under a state surveillance program.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

State officials say consumers who bought raw milk from Jerry Dell Farm should dispose of it and contact the agriculture department if they have questions.

The department's telephone number is 518.457.1772.
