The state senate voted 44-16 Tuesday in favor of legalization of professional mixed martial arts.

This is the sixth year supporters have tried to make MMA legal in New York.

The legalization of MMA would be lucrative for the New York City market, but the prospects of the bill passing in the state assembly are uncertain. The assembly has declined several times to authorize the New York State Athletic Commission to regulate the sport as it does boxing.
