Animal shelters across New York State will soon be required to check for microchips when they take in stray and abandoned animals. The measure signed by Governor Cuomo last week requires shelters to try and reach the animal’s owner within 24 hours if the microchip information is able to be read and retrieved. Another part of the measure directs the state department of agriculture work on creating a set of rules and regulations to standardize microchip technologies.
