US Senator Charles Schumer wants new services for veterans after the recent Washington Navy Yard shootings.

He proposes new 24-hour emergency resource centers to be set up by the Veterans Affairs Office health facilities. Police departments could report their concerns about a veteran to the centers for possible interventions when they deal with someone who appears distressed.

There are about 40 veteran health facilities in upstate New York.

Schumer’s idea follows the recent shootings by a man who was a veteran and a defense contractor. He showed signs earlier that a mental health review may have avoided the tragedy.
