65-year-old Robert Doggart was arrested in 2015 in connection with a purported plot to burn down a mosque in Islamburg, a hamlet in the Town of Tompkins north of Hancock.

According to the Times Free Press in Chattanooga, jurors on Wednesday indicated they were unable to reach a verdict.

The newspaper reported that it was not known whether the jury was deadlocked on all four counts it is weighing.

Doggart is being tried on charges of solicitation to commit a civil rights violation, to commit arson, and two counts of threat in interstate commerce.

Prosecutors have said Doggart's plans included burning a mosque, a school and a cafeteria at Islamberg.

According to the Times Free Press, a defense attorney said Doggert was convinced the people living in Islamberg wanted to carry out a terror attack on New York City because of reports by Fox News.

After being informed of the deadlock, the judge instructed the jurors to return Thursday morning. He said he was not yet prepared to declare a mistrial.
