John R. Santomassino, 70, of Harpersfield passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born October 6, 1942 in Manhattan, New York the son of the late John and Clara (Perna) Santomassino.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged.

On May 16, 1973, John married Laurel “Chris” Writer in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Together they shared 39 years of marriage.

John was an appliance technician for General Electric on Long Island for many years until his retirement.

John was a hard worker and was very proud to have built his home. He enjoyed antique cars especially his pride and joy, ’58 Cadillac. He also enjoyed model airplanes and was a member of the Otsego County RC Flyers, Oneonta. John was also a member of the Col. Harper Grange in Harpersfield. But most of all John loved spending time with his family.

John is survived by his loving wife, Laurel “Chris” Santomassino of Harpersfield; son, Kenneth and Donna Santomassino of Long Island; daughter, Erin Marie Toupin of Vermont; son-in-law, Richard Wieczoreck of Florida; grandchildren, Julie Elizabeth and Blake Alan Wieczoreck; brother, Rocco and Barbara Santomassino of Long Island; as well as several nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Wendy Wieczoreck.

A service to celebrate the life of John R. Santomassino will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta with the Reverend Mel Farmer Pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta officiating.
