Happy Birthday today to the wiffle ball.

A direct descendant of the neighborhood stick ball game found for decades in the urban areas of America, the wiffle ball is a light-weight plastic perforated ball designed for close play, as in back yards or even indoors.  The wiffle ball's inventor was David Mullany, Fairfield, Connecticut in 1953.  It really had no name at the beginning, but the creator's son and friends struck out so many times when playing ball with the new ball ("whiffs) that the name was born.
