The canister vacuum cleaner was "born" on this day in England in 1901.

It's hard to believe that for many years a vacuum cleaner was considered a luxury.  It wasn't until after World War II that housewives demanded an easier way to clean their homes.  Manufacturers responded by creating newer and cheaper models.

Can you imagine there was a time when dusting was the only way to clean you home, rugs, drapes, etc?  How tedious.  These canister vacuum cleaners were unwieldy monsters for sure.  How many times did you stub your toe on one of these heavy contraptions.  And watch out for the cord!  But it was a huge innovation that was embraced with open arms by American housewives from coast-to-coast.

Did you (or your Mom or Grandma) have one?
