The Greater Oneonta Historical Society’s annual Sally Mullen Local History Awards for 2016-17 will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Oneonta Municipal Airport. A past president of GOHS, Mullen– who died in 2014– was a driving force behind the acquisition of the future Oneonta History Center at 183 Main St.– as well as placing the Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The awards recognize her dedication to local history. There will be two contests — essay and art. The essay topic is “The Importance and Value of Aviation to Oneonta and Surrounding Communities in Otsego County.” The two winning essays from a middle and a high school student will receive $75; second place will receive $50; and third place, $25. The Airport Bed Sheet Collage/Painting contest will produce a rendering of the “Importance of the Oneonta Municipal Airport to Oneonta and Otsego County.” Prizes are similar to the essay contest.
