One of baseball's most beloved icons has died.

Ernie Banks, known as "Mr. Cub" for his longtime association with the Chicago Cubs, passed away last night at the age of 83.  Banks, who enjoyed baseball so much he was often heard saying, "Hey, let's play two today!", was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1977 on his first year on the ballot.  He was a 14 time All-Star and a two time National League Most Valuable Player.  His uniform number, 14, was retired by his team, the Chicago Cubs, in 1982.

In 2013, Banks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony.
