Chatrajit Hemraj, 38 of the Bronx, was indicted and arrested by Otsego County Sheriffs Monday for perjury as a result of his testimony to the grand jury on Dec. 4.

On Aug. 8, he was arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance after heroin and money were seized. Hemraj was interviewed by Otsego County Sheriff’s investigators and DEA special agents about his alleged criminal activity in Oneonta.

Hemraj was later arraigned in the Oneonta City Court and remanded to the Otsego County correctional facility on $25,000 bail.

On Dec. 4, his drug possession case was presented to the grand jury and Hemraj testified on his own behalf. Hemraj allegedly made false statements under oath when testifying and was subsequently indicted on a felony perjury charge.

Monday he was arraigned by County Court Judge John Lambert on the third degree criminal possession charge and first degree perjury charge and remanded back to the Otsego County correctional facility on $25,000 bail.

If convicted Hemraj faces an additional seven years in prison on the perjury charge and up to nine years on the criminal possession of a controlled substance charge. Otsego County District Attorney John Muehl is prosecuting the case
