Jerry Vale, one of the last of the great Italian-America crooners of the 1950s and 1960s, has died at 83.

Vale recorded more than 50 albums, and although he never reached the popularity of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, he was considered to be one of the best of the genre.

In 1963 he recorded The National Anthem (Star Spangeld Banner).  The record was played at sporting events for years and a gold-plated album of his performance is on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
