Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in World Series history in on this day in 1956.

His feat is really amazing.  In the high pressure arena of a World Series setting, Larsen needed only 97 pitches to secure his place in baseball history.  He was pitching for the New York Yankees.  His opposing Brooklyn Dodger pitcher was Sal Maglie.

In the ninth inning Larsen faced pinch hitter Dale Mitchell, a .311 hitter.  Larsen got ahead of Mitchell 1-2 and then smoked him with a called third strike fastball.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Don Larsen is 84 years old and lives on the West Coast.
