This is a real true blue Baby Boomer memory.  I know it still goes on, but "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" was born in 1950 right as many boomers were beginning to venture out on Halloween in our masks and costumes on Halloween night.

United Nations Children's Fund was started by the wife of a Philadelphia minister. Mrs. Mary Emma Allison began the effort to raise money for the undernourished of the world, particularly those still reeling from the effects of World War II.  Kids were encouraged to decorate milk cartons and collect (door-to-door) nickels and dimes for the effort.

Her efforts helped garner the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize for UNICEF.  In his congratulatory letter to Mrs. Allison, President Lyndon Johnson thanked her "for turning a holiday often marred by youthful vandalism into a celebration of world citizenship."

How many remember taking around the little orange box on Halloween and shouting "Trick or Treat for UNICEF!!"
