Actor William Holden was born on this day in 1918.

A solid, charming and very talented actor, Holden made his dazzling screen debut opposite Barbara Stanwyck in the 1939 film "Golden Boy."  He would go on to star in more than 50 movies.

Holden's filmography includes several of the most important films of the latter part of the 20th century.  He was Oscar nominated three times and won the Best Actor Oscar in 1953 for the World War II film "Stalag 17."

Other Holden hits include "Sunset Boulevard," "Network," "The Bridge on the River Kwai," and "The Towering Inferno."

William Holden died on November 12, 1983 at the age of 63.
