Federal grants are now available to assist those with health issues to obtain air conditioning for their homes. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that $3 million in funding is allocated through the Home Energy Assistance Program.

Individuals eligible for assistance can now apply at their local department of social services. Officials say last summer, nearly 5,000 households received assistance. To qualify, applicants must meet existing HEAP income guidelines and have at least one member of the household that suffers from a documented medical condition exacerbated by extreme heat.
