An accident that left one woman dead closed State Route 23 at the intersection of County Route 11, near Cook Cemetery, for around three hours Tuesday morning, according to West Oneonta Fire Chief Walter Schmitt.

The road re-opened at 11:30 a.m. Several emergency personnel responded to the scene.

The investigation revealed that Francis X. Gesel Jr., age 66 of Leominster, MA was eastbound on State Route 23 when he crossed into the westbound lane. His vehicle traveled into the path of a 2008 Hyundai Accent being driven by Terry L. Church, age 62 of Oneonta.
