For those of you who enjoy my World War II file every morning, this book is for you.

Jim Hedtke writes about a little known Allied air disaster in England which claimed the lives of more than 60 people including U.S. airmen, RAF airmen, and civilians including many small children.  On August 23, 1944 a giant B-24 bomber took off from an airbase in England, got lost in a sudden raging thunderstorm and came slamming down on the sleepy little village of Freckleton.  The result was absolute horror.

In the minutes following the crash of the bomber into a snack bar, several houses and a children's school, heroism and inspiration came to the fore from both townsfolk and servicemen from the near by air base.

This book is packed with goosebump vignettes.  It is a must for all who enjoy those little known stories that keep popping up about the war.  Author Hedtke has been to Freckleton several times and his familiarity with the scene really adds wallop to this important book.
